Make the Drive to These 4 Great Outdoor Activities Near Flagstaff, AZ

Arizona is known for its wide range of adventures and wild landscapes, and Flagstaff is no exception. You can experience the excitement with this list of our four favorite outdoor activities in the Flagstaff, AZ, area.

1. Picture Canyon Community Tours

You can take a free guided tour of this Flagstaff landmark this summer on June 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. You’ll learn more about the history, geology, and nature of Picture Canyon, where you can see petroglyphs from the Northern Sinagua people and other important cultural artifacts. Tours of Picture Canyon are open to the public, but you have to register in advance by contacting the Willow Bend Center since space is limited.

On the day of the tour, meet at the Picture Canyon trailhead, 3920 East El Paso Flagstaff Road in Flagstaff. You can also take a self-guided tour of the 478-acre preserve, which allows horseback riding, biking, and hiking. This historic site is free and open to the public year-round.

2. Public Art Tour of Flagstaff

Experience dozens of public art installations that highlight the culture and history of Flagstaff. You have your choice of a 1.5-mile walking tour through the Historic Southside District and Historic Downtown or a 7-mile biking route that adds the art displayed at the Sawmill Multicultural Art and Nature Park and the Northern Arizona University campus.

Both tours start at the Flagstaff Visitor Center. It’s located at 1 East Route 66.

3. Flagstaff Outdoor Markets

The city offers several outdoor markets that run weekly or monthly on a seasonal basis. First, the Flagstaff Urban Flea Market occurs on the second Saturday of each month from June through October. You can also get local produce, handmade goods, and more every Sunday from May 7 to October 29, 8 a.m. to noon at the Flagstaff Community Market. Finally, the Downtown Community Market runs on Wednesday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m. during June and July.

The Urban Market and Community Market take place at City Hall, 211 Aspen Avenue in Flagstaff. You can attend the Wednesday night Downtown Community Market in the parking lot at 15 North Beaver Street in Flagstaff, across the street from the Orpheum Theater.

4. Yoga on the Lawn

This free community event takes place every Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It’s a great way to get fit and meet other Flagstaff residents.

The class is taught by Holly White from 9 to 10 a.m. It’s held on the County Courthouse Law at 200 North San Francisco Street. Be sure to bring your own yoga mat and towel!
