The Top 4 Attractions and Experiences in Flagstaff Flagstaff is full of fun and exciting experiences and activities for everyone. Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or by yourself, be sure to check out the following four attractions.

  1. Walnut Canyon National Monument

If you’re a fan of the outdoors and history, you don’t want to miss experiencing the Walnut Canyon National Monument. This attraction shows you years of history through the geology of its rocks. The canyon was home to the Sinagua Indians for over 100 years. Although they mysteriously disappeared around 1250, they left over 80 cliff dwellings in their wake.

The canyon now functions as a popular scenic and historic hiking location. It has many different trails, but the most popular is the loop trail that goes down into the canyon. Along this trail, you can observe 25 of the ancient limestone cliff dwellings left by the Sinagua Indians while enjoying the beauty that nature has to offer.

  1. Lava River Cave

The Lava River Cave is a mile-long tunnel that was formed many years ago due to an erupted volcanic vent near Hart Prairie. As you walk the tunnel, you’ll see evidence of the creation of the cave through the wave-like undulations in the floor and the stone icicles hanging from the ceiling. This attraction provides an experience like none other.

If you decide to go adventuring to this cave, be sure you dress in warm clothes and solid shoes. Even in the hot summer months, the cave can be as cool as 42 degrees and may even have some ice throughout its interior, making the trek sharp and slippery. You’ll also want to have some form of light with you since it gets quite dark when you travel a mile away from any source of light.

  1. Lowell Observatory

Lowell Observatory brings together history and science for an experience like none other. The attraction offers many guided tours including a tour along the path taken by Clyde Tombaugh on the night he discovered Pluto. When the skies are clear, you’ll enjoy gazing at the moon, planets, and other objects in the cosmos using the giant Clark refractor that was built in 1896. You can also experience the wide expanse of the cosmos through the observatory’s various multimedia shows, exhibits, and live presentations.
