Flagstaff, AZ, situated near the majestic San Francisco Peaks, is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the state. Adding to its charm is its extensive park system that takes advantage of the community’s unique geography. The following parks are some of the best that the area has to offer, and they’re just a short drive away!
1. Thorpe Park
Located on 191 N. Thorpe Road, a short distance west from downtown Flagstaff, Thorpe is a well-rounded park with something for everyone. It has walking paths, a large, fenced-in dog park, and a fishing pond that’s surrounded by tall trees providing plenty of shade. The playground is full of things for kids to do, including a jungle gym, seesaws, slides, and a unique climbing wall. There’s even a popular disc golf course!
Sports enthusiasts will love that Thorpe Park is also home to a sporting complex that boasts four baseball diamonds and multiple basketball, beach volleyball, tennis, and racquetball courts. Picnic tables with their own BBQ grills are found throughout the park, as well.
2. Buffalo Park
Gorgeous views of Devil’s Chair, Mt. Humphrey’s, and Mt. Elden can be enjoyed when you visit this 215-acre park on 2400 N. Gemini Road. Many visitors come to Buffalo Park to hike its 2.2-mile scenic trail loop that will take them through ponderosa pine forests and picturesque meadows. The trail is fairly flat, so it’s very accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. At night, the park becomes an incredible spot for gazing at the stars.
If you’re an avid mountain biker, you can use the Hyundai Santa Cruz’s versatile hauling capabilities to bring your bike along. From Buffalo Park, you’ll be able to ride into the Dry Lake Hills, which provide a good challenge for experienced mountain bikers. The southern slopes of Mt. Elden can be reached by taking the Oldham Trail, located at the northern edge of the park.
3. Foxglenn Park
Foxglenn Park on 4200 E. Butler Avenue stands out with its Children’s Garden, hosting an interesting collection of sculptures. It’s also got an excellent skatepark, which features rails, flat ledges, bank ramps, quarter pipes, and bowls. Other sporting venues at the park include fields for soccer and baseball. The baseball fields, in particular, provide bleachers from which you can watch local teams play.
At the southwestern edge of the park, the walking path connects to the Flagstaff Urban Trail System. Part of the trail will take visitors through a prairie dog colony, recognizable from its many mounds and burrow entrances. During the winter, the park’s small hills ​make for great sledding.
